Black Culture
Are You "Woke"?
What Does the Term Being "Woke" Even Mean?
#StayWoke reminds Black people that there is more than one reality to life in America. According to Urban Dictionary, being "woke" is being aware of racism and social injustice. The term references a person who: thinks for themselves; sees the ways in which "the system" operates against Black people; understands racial inequalities; and is aware of white supremacy and how it affects Black lives on a daily basis.

What is Black Culture?
Black culture can be seen in music, art, religion, language, family structure, food, literature, dance and so much more. Black culture is about community involvement and the accumulation of wealth. It is also about giving back to the community by uplifting and empowering one another. Black culture includes our "swag" and "coolness", in addition to spoken word and creative dance and art work, to name a few.
Do We Know Enough About Our Culture?
Well, in my opinion no. The schools have done a shitty job (excuse my language) of teaching us, as Black people, our history. Our parents have also done a shitty job at it because I'm sure they too are unfamiliar with Black culture. At the end of the day you have the blind leading the blind.

Importance of Knowing Your Culture and History
When you have an understanding of your culture, you're able to pass that information down from one generation to the next. When you don't have an understanding of your culture and history, you mistakenly begin to accept other cultures as your own.

Black history includes the contributions of Black people to the development of arts, technology, science, world trade, religion, philosophy, history, and civilization as a whole. A Black child or adult who is unfamiliar with this information, or has been convinced that Black history begins with slavery, is very much mislead and misinformed about the power of the Black mind and the importance of Black contributions.

Black History
As we have falsely been taught, Black history seems to always begin with slavery. This is a problem because where were we prior to this? Africa? Where in Africa? Specifically what is "Black History"? These are questions we are seeking answers to. These are not questions that can easily be answered using Google. Trust me, I've tried lol.
