What to Do as a Book Club Member

If this is your first time joining a book club, you are in luck! Why, one because this book club is not just about "reading." This book club is about gaining knowledge and understanding about who we as Black people were, who we are, and who we will become. Nothing is more exciting and empowering than that! Two, you will have access to a wide variety of perspectives and views from others who will be embarking upon this journey with you! Lastly, book clubs (well at least this book club) do not have to be boring. We can throw parties, have book discussions over wine and henny (lol), day parties for members only, and lots more! Lets make this book club exciting and fun!

Here, I will give you step by step instructions on the entire process.

First: Check the Website and Your Email! I will be sending updates via email. Don't worry, I wont spam you lol. I will be sending you important updates and referring you to the website for more information. I will also be blogging throughout the month so stay tuned! My blogs will focus on the book for that particular month. 

​

Second: Of Course You Need the Book! The book description and a link to the book on Amazon will be included under each month's page description. Just click on "Month of..." for more information on the book. I will try to keep books as cheap as possible and Amazon typically has really good deals. You are definitely welcome to purchase the book outside of Amazon, please just make sure you are purchasing the exact same book to keep up with chapters and page numbers.

Third: Read. Read. Read. Once you have purchased the book, just start reading. Information about the book, begin date, chapters to read, and a week by week schedule for the entire month will be posted 2 weeks prior. This gives everyone time to purchase the book in advance and prepare to dive in!

Fourth: The Meet Up. So, this is a VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB! A virtual book club is "a space or website that brings people together to share their ideas and thoughts as they journey through a book." We will not be meeting in person to discuss "this month's book." We will be meeting via zoom. The link is posted under "Join Us On Zoom" on the home page. Just click it! I would love to have 100% participation during the meetings =) everyone's opinion matters! I do want to make it a little interesting for those who live in or near Durham, Raleigh, or Charlotte, North Carolina, and plan some annual events and activities! Stay tuned!

Fifth: Member of the Month. This was designed to show recognition to "Thee Black Book Club" members. Become recognized by completing a short reflection on the book of the month. Find out more information under the "Member of the Month" section.

Sixth: Be Yourself! This book club is a judgment free zone! No comment or question is stupid and everyone's opinion is relevant. Remain open during the entire reading and meeting. This is the time to get whatever you have been feeling while reading the book off of your chest and talk about it. Be active!
