Months of April and May

"The New Jim Crow"

"The New Jim Crow" is a 2012 book written by legal scholar, Michelle Alexander. Michelle argues, "we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." By targeting black men through the War on Drugs and destroying Black communities, the United States criminal justice system is merely functioning as a new method of racial control.

We will begin our fifth book on April 1, 2019. Hopefully everyone is now familiar with the site and GroupMe. The book is $13.56 on Amazon and contains 261 pages and 6 chapters. I've provided a weekly schedule below for everyone to ATTEMPT to follow.

The book is broken into 6 chapters.

Week 1s and 2 (April 1-14) Chapters 1-2

Weeks 3 and 4 (April 15-28) Chapters 3-4

Weeks 5 and 6 (April 29- May 12) Chapters 5-6

Weeks 7 and 8 (May 13-31) Catch Up!

Saturday, June 1, 2019: Zoom meeting from 6pm-6:40pm EST (Zoom has placed a cap of 40 mins on each session). Click the Zoom link under "Join Us on Zoom." Come prepared to ask and answer questions and discuss your thoughts about the book of the month!

The plan is to finish one book every two months, however, the schedule may adjust when necessary.
