Months of March and April 2020
"Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome"
"Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" is a 2017 book written by Dr. Joy DeGruy .
Dr. DeGruy developed her theory of “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome” and published her findings in this month’s book. The book addresses the impact of generations of slavery and discusses how the Black community can use its strength from the past to heal in the present. According to Dr. DeGruy, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome is a theory that explains many of the adaptive survival behaviors in African American communities today. It is a condition that exists due to multi-generational oppression of Africans and their descendants as a result of centuries of slavery. Slavery was then followed by institutionalized racism which continues to perpetuate injury, resulting in what she refers to as “M.A.P.” Multi-generational trauma, continued oppression, absence of opportunities to heal, and absence of access to societal benefits have all lead to her theory of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome.
